Wind measurement

The MAINGRID Group of Companies conducts wind measurement campaigns and installs wind measurement masts (hereinafter referred to as masts).

What is wind measurement?

Wind measurement is the process of measuring wind characteristics (direction, speed, turbulence, etc.) at the site under consideration. The main goal of wind measurement is to determine the wind potential in order to subsequently calculate the electricity generated by wind turbines.

How is a wind measurement campaign carried out?

As part of a wind measurement campaign, a mast 100 to 120 meters high is installed, carrying meteorological sensors that measure wind speed (anemometers), wind direction (wind vanes), temperature, humidity and pressure. Measurements are taken over a period of 12 months or longer.

The collected data is required for analysis and for the preparation of the final report by accredited organizations. The report contains information about the region under consideration and its electricity generation potential, and is used to attract investors to the wind power plant project.
